   ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

The endocrine system is the messenger system of the body. It is controlled by the hypothalamus in the brain, and is responsible for sending hormones throughout the body to maintain all biological processes and functioning, as well as emotional responses, reactions and stability.
Overstimulation of the adrenal glands increases cortisol, and initiates the body’s fight, flight or freeze responses. It’s important to note our endocrine system evolved to ensure we could escape dangers in the open wild. The endocrine system does not, however, differentiate between the stress of being chased by a lion or having to meet an extreme deadline at school or work. In today’s world, it’s important to help the system by practicing mindfulness and eating right to control the system as needed.

Major indicators of thriving include:

SELF EVALUATION

Regular rest, healthy eating and exercise all contribute to a well-functioning endocrine system. Specifically, a healthy physical body plays an important role in ensuring the endocrine system is working properly. However, mental and emotional health is equally important to this system. Responses to trauma and emotional triggers can overstimulate the endocrine system. One of the most important questions to ask oneself is, “Am I physically, mentally and emotionally responding appropriately to the situation?”.
